Pendlerapp D/DK: Mobile guidance for cross-border commuters
With Pendlerapp D/DK, leapfrog developed a mobile application for iOS and Android on behalf of the Regionskontor Sønderjylland-Schleswig, making advisory and information services for cross-border commuters between Germany and Denmark digitally accessible, secure, and practical for everyday use. The app helps citizens find information more quickly, submit inquiries on mobile devices, upload documents securely, and schedule appointments with ease.
A particularly forward-looking aspect of the solution is its use of AI-powered tools to simplify information research. An integrated chat accesses the relevant information sources and helps users find content that matches their personal living and working situation more quickly.
Initial situation
Advisory services for employees and employers in border regions are becoming increasingly digital. At the same time, the issues involved are often complex: topics such as taxation, social security, labor law, family benefits, or administrative processes frequently affect two countries at once and require information that is clear, reliable, and quickly accessible.
For the Regionskontor Sønderjylland-Schleswig, the key question was how to translate these advisory and service offerings into a modern mobile experience. The goal was to create a solution that would not only be functionally strong, but also meet high standards in terms of usability, data protection, and operational reliability.
Challenge
The main challenge was to develop a digital tool that translates complex cross-border information into a simple and intuitive mobile experience. Citizens should not have to spend a long time searching for information, but instead reach the content relevant to their individual situation quickly and easily.
At the same time, the app had to meet several requirements:
easy access to advisory services
secure communication with the info center
structured presentation of extensive information resources
mobile usability on iOS and Android
high standards for data protection and technical stability
a future-ready architecture that allows for further extensions, such as AI features
Solution
Together with the Regionskontor Sønderjylland-Schleswig, leapfrog designed and implemented Pendlerapp D/DK. The result is a mobile platform that combines information, communication, and service in a single application.
Among other things, the app enables citizens in the German-Danish border region to:
submit advisory requests directly through the app
upload documents securely
schedule appointments easily
receive push notifications and email updates on relevant commuter topics
search for relevant content in a more targeted way
access the info center quickly
A key added value is the intelligent support for information discovery. Through an integrated AI chat, users can ask questions in natural language. The chat accesses the relevant information resources and helps make content available faster, in a more contextual way, and in a more user-friendly format. Instead of confronting citizens with a large volume of information, the app guides them toward the answers that are most relevant to them.
Technological approach
The development focused on creating a solution that combines modern expectations for mobile user experiences with the requirements of public and advisory institutions. In addition to the core app functionality, particular attention was paid to a clear information architecture and the integration of intelligent assistance features.
The use of AI tools is not an end in itself, but provides a clear improvement to the user experience: information becomes easier to find, individual questions can be addressed more effectively, and access to complex topics is significantly simplified. The AI chat adds a contemporary layer of digital guidance and orientation to the app.
Outcome
With Pendlerapp D/DK, the Sønderjylland-Schleswig region now has a digital companion for cross-border commuters that supports many everyday concerns on mobile devices and makes access to advisory services much easier. Citizens save time, gain orientation more quickly, and can submit inquiries and documents digitally with ease.
For the Regionskontor, the app represents a modern extension of its existing advisory services. For leapfrog, the project demonstrates how mobile applications, secure digital processes, and AI-supported information systems can be combined in a meaningful way.
Funding and collaboration
The project was funded as part of the Grenzscout funding program by the Federal Ministry of the Interior on the basis of a resolution of the German Bundestag. Together with leapfrog and additional advisory centers in border regions, needs were identified and technical solutions were developed. The launch of the app also marks the beginning of a practical testing phase, during which user feedback will be incorporated into its further development.
Transferability to other border regions
Pendlerapp D/DK is not only a solution for the German-Danish border region, but also a transferable model for other regions with cross-border mobility. Wherever citizens need to navigate different legal, social security, and administrative systems, a comparable app can significantly improve access to advice and information.
Thanks to its modular structure, mobile usability, and integration of AI-supported research functions, the concept is also well suited to other border regions looking to expand their digital advisory services.
Platforms
The app is available free of charge under the name “Pendlerapp D/DK” for iOS and Android.
